I was born and raised in Whangarei, in a childhood dominated by dairy farming and attending sporting fixtures – my siblings, my parents or mine.
I began work in a Chartered Accountants office in Whangarei (Barr, Burgess & Stewart – then the New Zealand name for Coopers & Lybrand). I worked full time and studied part time to gain my accountancy qualifications.
In 1978 I married Joanne, also a Chartered Accountant and we moved to Hawkes Bay where I worked for Barr, Burgess & Stewart in Napier. After 18 months in Napier we moved to Te Awamutu. My experience with the large firm stood me in good stead to take on a position at Finn & Partners, made available by the retirement of Dick Finn from the firm. I became a partner at Finn & Partners in April 1980, and continued there for 21 years.
Our first son was also born in April 1980, and he was followed by three more boys, who have all grown up on our dairy farm on the outskirts of Te Awamutu. We enjoyed watching them grow up in Te Awamutu and in particular following their sporting endeavours around the Waikato and beyond.
In November 2001 the opportunity arose for me to join Mervyn Gyde and Gyde Wansbone was born.
I have enjoyed many years of close association with my clients, watching businesses grow and develop, children grow up and join family businesses, new businesses emerge and diversify, as clients structure their affairs to suit their needs, their strengths and their lifestyle.
I have a particular interest in the dairy industry, but have been privileged to share in the business stories and successes of many clients from a wide range of backgrounds.
