I grew up in Bury in the North West of England, not far from Manchester. I attended Bury Grammar School, enjoying cross country running and playing cello in the school orchestra. I also played for the local authority Youth Orchestra which gave me an opportunity to travel around the country as well as Europe to compete in competitions.
In 1990 I attended Lancaster University, which has a renowned Business faculty, and completed a Bachelor of Science in Management Sciences, majoring in Economics. In 1993 after university I joined Hurst & Co, a small Accounting Practice in Stockport and completed the three years of exams and training necessary to join the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales (ICAEW). My time at Hurst & Co gave me invaluable experience of working with a range of clients, problem solving, providing taxation advice and carrying out audits, and I was promoted to Assistant Manager.
In 2000 the world of commerce beckoned and I moved to be the financial accountant at Blemain Finance, a large independent finance company in Manchester. After two and a half years of great experience there, I took a year off to travel across Asia and through Australia and New Zealand. It was on this trip that I met Cath who would later become my wife.
On returning to England I worked for United Utilities, the largest provider of power to the North West of England at their head office, before moving to Te Awamutu with Cath, joining Gyde Wansbone in 2005 and completing my New Zealand C A qualification. I have joined the executive committee of the Chamber of Commerce. Cath and I now have a daughter Molly who takes up most of our spare time.
My varied experience dealing with small and large companies both in practice and in industry enables me to understand the different needs of different clients and realise that each client has their own needs and set of problems which need to be addressed on an individual basis.
